With enhancing people-to-people linkages towards a united ASEAN community as one of its key objectives, the Brunei – U.S. English Language Enrichment Project for ASEAN was launched in 2012 with a number of programmes and initiatives, developed and defined with the purpose of strengthening ASEAN unity through enhancing capacity to communicate in a common language: English.

One of the initiatives under the Brunei – U.S. umbrella is the biennial Forum on English for ASEAN Integration, which serves as an interactive platform to bring together officials from all 10 ASEAN member states to exchange views on each country’s contribution and efforts towards achieving the vision of one ASEAN.

The first Forum on English for ASEAN Integration was held in 2013 under the theme of “Policies and Practices,” and topics of discussions concentrated on each country’s English language policy, and the practices of teaching and learning of English in the country’s education system.

This year’s Forum, themed “Initiatives and Reflections,” will look at the development of ASEAN Integration and its future. Under the theme of “Initiatives,” the discussions will encompass any measures and initiatives that are in existence in each country, which have been designed and implemented with the intention of fostering regional solidarity and ASEAN oneness. The theme “Reflections” is specifically intended to open space for a dialogue on the Brunei – U.S. Project, specifically the 11-week English Language Programme. Consequently, the speakers for this segment will comprise alumni of the Programme and have already been identified by the Brunei – U.S. management team.

With the planned publication of the Forum proceedings, which will also be made available for free online, the Forum will provide an added value as a complementary source of information and consultation.
